About Me

I started learning BSL (British Sign Language) in 1996 having applied for a job with a charity. They had two houses with Deaf men and women in and the opportunity arose to gain a new skill (which I never envisaged would lead to an occupation)

I studied and worked within a Deaf/hearing staff team up to level three and then a change of job took me to Leeds where I worked as a CSW (Communication Support Worker) within the colleges and university in and around the city. At the same time I started studying NVQ level four firstly the language units then subsequently the interpreting units.

A bereavement in my personal life brought me back down to my home county of Suffolk where I worked as a staff interpreter for an agency gaining valuable knowledge and experience in most domains. I continued(with life occasionally getting in the way) to study and completed my NVQ interpreting units in 2008.

Who am I?

August of the same year saw me decide to spread my wings and go freelance, this was a difficult decision as I also had got onto the property ladder so was apprehensive but fortunately I never looked back :- Carpe Diem being the motto or as 'Del boy' once said 'he who dares...'

Forwarding on eight years and my base is Suffolk, I cover five counties (more if needed) and work in all domains - police, child protection, conferences, community (hospital, GP's) office support, mental health and the arts.

One of my specialisms is the arts and I interpret regularly at my local theatre The New Wolsey. I also work/have worked both Glastonbury and Latitude festival interpreting music mainly but I also work on the comedy, literary, poetry stages.

I enjoy the challenges that working in the arts brings from initially the preparation of a script and then changing it into BSL or taking a song and unpicking the lyrics and meaning making it as visual as possible.

Smaller theatre companies I've worked for have included 'Spinning wheel' and the Pacitti company.
